Get Gladder

Happiness, researched and practiced

Climb to the tenth rung.

Gallup asks people in more than 140 countries to picture a ladder. Rung 0 is the worst possible life for you, rung 10 the best. This app gathers what decades of research say moves people up that ladder, and turns it into things you can do in minutes.

Three altitudes of happiness

Researchers separate how you feel in the moment from how you rate your life overall. We sort what helps into three altitudes, from quick lifts to the rare moments that take your breath away.

Altitude 1

Happy

Feeling good

The body's joys: daylight, sleep, movement, music, laughter, good food. Quick to reach and quick to fade, so you top them up every day.

  • Move
  • Sleep
  • Get outside
  • Be present
Altitude 2

Very happy

Life going well

Warm relationships, kindness, gratitude, purpose, and work that absorbs you so fully that time disappears. These build slowly and last longest.

  • Connect
  • Eat together
  • Give
  • Find flow
Altitude 3

Extremely happy

Beyond yourself

Awe at something vast, love, and joy shared with others: dancing, singing, laughing together. You can't force these peaks. You can make room for them often.

  • Awe walks
  • Dance together
  • Laugh
  • Love out loud

The happiness paradox. In experiments, people nudged to value happiness above everything felt less happy watching a joyful film, because they were let down by their own feelings (Mauss et al., 2011). So don't grade your mood. Aim your effort at small actions and let the feelings arrive on their own.

When happiness feels far away

Low stretches happen to everyone, and sometimes they are more than a mood. If you've felt down or numb most days for two weeks or more, or you're having thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out today: a doctor, someone you trust, or a helpline.
